Lenoir man, 91, killed in tractor-trailer collision

A Lenoir man died after a tractor-trailer struck his vehicle near the Town of Catawba on Monday afternoon. Frank Arthur Jr., 91, of Lenoir, was traveling east in a 2004 Nissan Maxima on U.S. Highway 70 E when he attempted to make a left turn onto Oxford School Road, said North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Swagger. The tractor-trailer, a Hawk Transportation LLC truck out of Concord, was traveling west on 70 when it struck Arthur’s vehicle on the driver’s side, pushing it into a ditch across from the Dollar General on Oxford School Road. Arthur was pronounced dead on the scene, Swagger said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was assessed by medical personnel, but did not sustain any injuries, he added. One witness was shopping in the Dollar General when he and the other shoppers heard a loud “boom” and ran from the store to investigate. Witnesses of the wreck said accidents occur often in the area/intersection. Swagger does not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident. The crash remains under investigation.
