Man Killed in Crash with Semi on Highway 60

A Kevil man died after the pickup truck he was driving was struck by a semi tractor-trailer. According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened at 5:40 am near the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and Kingsway Drive. Deputies said a semi tractor-trailer driven by 65-year-old John Rhee from Carl Junction, MO was westbound on Highway 60 when his truck dropped off the right shoulder of the road and struck two driveway culverts. Deputies said 39-year-old Austin Patterson of Kevil was eastbound in a pickup truck. Witnesses said Patterson stopped his pickup and pulled close to the guardrail when he saw the semi leave the opposite side of the road. According to deputies, Rhee got the semi back on the road but it crossed the center line and hit Patterson’s pickup head-on. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene by the McCracken County Coroner. Rhee was taken to a local hospital to be checked for possible injuries. The highway was shut down until 4:45 pm for an accident reconstruction team to investigate at the scene.
