Pickup truck driver charged after crash snarls U.S. 264 traffic

Troopers say the driver of a pickup truck has been charged after an accident Thursday morning shut down part of a busy Eastern Carolina highway. Trooper D.A. Swanson says the driver of a loaded recycling tractor trailer made a left turn to merge onto Highway 264 around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection with Sheppard Mill Road. At the time, Swanson says a driver in a Chevrolet pickup truck was also traveling westbound and failed to reduce speed. The truck clipped the tractor trailer, resulting in a serious crash that left the driver, 29-year-old Coby Kellum of Washington, pinned in the truck for about half an hour. Trooper Swanson says Kellum was transported to the hospital with serious injures but in stable condition. The Washington man was charged with failure to reduce speed. The driver of the recycling truck was not injured. The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours because of the crash.
