Police ID man killed in semi truck crash on I-94 west of Ann Arbor

SCIO TOWNSHIP, MI – Police have identified a semitruck driver killed in a crash on Interstate 94 last week.
Richard P. Rider, 42, of Redford was killed in the crash about 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 on eastbound I-94 near Zeeb Road, Michigan State Police Lt. Mario Gonzales said. That’s just west of Ann Arbor.

Police believe Rider was driving eastbound on I-94 in a 2012 Volvo semitruck when a semitruck in front of him, a 2006 Volvo, lost control and started veering from the right lane onto the road’s shoulder, police previously said.

Semitruck lost control ahead of fatal crash on I-94 west of Ann Arbor, Rider’s vehicle collided with the semitruck in front of him and he was ejected, police said. He was subsequently struck by a vehicle traveling in the center lane and later pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the other semitruck and vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The crash caused fuel and some of the 2006 Volvo truck’s load – what appeared to be boxes of fruit snacks – to cover the road, Scio Township Interim Fire Chief Doug Armstrong previously said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Gonzales said. Police have not charged anyone in connection with the incident.
