Trucker collapses after inspection, is saved by the Iowa DOT officer who placed him out of service

An Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Inspector is being honored by the Red Cross for helping to save a truck driver who had a heart attack at a weigh station. Sergeant Jeff Jones has been nominated for a Red Cross 2018 Heroes of the Heartland award for the action he took to to save the life of a trucker who had just gone through an inspection at a weigh station near Cedar Rapids.

After inspecting driver Jerald Kloppenborg’s truck and placing it out of service, Jones was brought back to the truck by Kloppenborg’s panicked wife. After determining that Kloppenborg was having a heart attack, Jones called for an ambulance, administered CPR, and used an automated external defibrillator to keep him alive until medical personnel arrived on the scene. Kloppenborg was taken to the hospital for quadruple bypass surgery, but survived thanks to Jones.
