Driver killed when tractor-trailer crashes, burns in Harnett County

BROADWAY, N.C. — A driver was killed when a tractor-trailer ran off the road and burned Tuesday afternoon in Harnett County. The fire was reported just before 3 p.m., and state troopers and firefighters responded to U.S. 421 North near Sloan Road to find the truck off the shoulder in the trees.

Authorities said the driver, identified as a man in his 50s, veered left and struck a tree, causing the cab of the truck to catch fire. The truck spilled 50 gallons of fuel into the roadway as a result of the crash, troopers said.

Authorities said the driver worked for HT Hackney and was picking up the empty trailer from Dunn in order to bring it to a facility in Newton. The North Carolina Department of Transportation issued an alert about diesel gasoline spilled in the road, and it was closed to traffic during the cleanup. Authorities are waiting on a report from the medical examiner to determine if a medical emergency led to the crash.
