Honolulu Fire Department personnel extinguished a fire aboard a tractor-trailer on the H-1 freeway this evening. According to HFD spokesman Capt. David Jenkins, other motorists alerted the driver of the truck to the fire, which was contained to about a quarter of the trailer. The vehicle came to a stop just before the Gulick Street offramp. Four HFD units staffed by 14 personnel responded to the fire, which was first reported at 8:34 p.m. The fire was brought under control by 8:55 and extinguished by 9:20 p.m. The vehicle is owned by Hawaii Logistics and was transporting food to retail outlets. Jenkins said the fire originated in the area of the rear axle of the trailer. The tractor was unaffected. No injuries were reported. A damage estimate was unavailable. Police closed all but one eastbound lane of the highway until the vehicle could be towed. Black Friday traffic was backed up for miles. All lanes were re-opened at appoximately 11:50 p.m.
