Broussard Police say the driver of an 18-wheeler has been taken to the hospital after a crash at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Morgan Street. On Thursday, July 5, 2018, at approximately 3:55 p.m., the Broussard Police Department responded to a major crash involving a tractor-trailer hauling drill pipe. Initial reports were that driver was crushed or impaled by the pipe, however, when officers arrived on the scene it was determined that he was trapped in the vehicle but not impaled.
The driver, from Baton Rouge, was trapped inside beneath several drill pipes. The fire department began extrication and he was treated by EMS and transported to a local hospital. The driver received moderate injuries and is in stable condition. Broussard Police say the driver applied his brakes at the stoplight on 90 and N. Morgan when the load, of pipes, shifted and crashed into the cab of the truck. Emergency crews on the scene were able to extricate the driver from the cab, police say. An 18-wheeler westbound was on scene to assist with the clean-up of the pipes that fell during the crash. All lanes are now open after the road was temporarily shut down
The driver was cited for careless operation.
