Two people are dead following an oil tanker crash on Intestate 89 in Middlesex. According to Vermont State Police, a tanker truck was travelling south around 4:30 Sunday afternoon when the driver lost control just south of Exit 9. The truck, carrying several different types of gas, crossed the median and northbound lanes, crashing off the east side of the highway. The driver and passenger were killed in the crash. Their identities have not been released. Both lanes of Interstate 89, between Exits 8 and 9, remain closed as crews work to offload the gas that remains in the tanker truck. Hazmat teams were called to mitigate environmental impact due to several leaks which occurred in the wreckage. Nearby homes were also checked for potential contamination. Amtrak service was temporarily suspended because of a potential danger for combustion, but that service has resumed. State police say it will be several hours before the intestate is back open in both directions.
