EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Paso Police released additional details in a crash involving two semi-trucks and five passenger vehicles on I-10 East near Yarbrough early Thursday morning.
According to traffic investigators, Gary McDaniel, of Arlington, Texas was driving a semi-truck east on I-10 just before 8 a.m. when he failed to notice traffic had stopped in front of him. McDaniel slammed into the back of a white 2016 Toyota Rav-4 driven by Rosa Luna.
The crash set off a chain reaction when Luna’s Rav-4 hit a 1996 Chevrolet Astro van, a 2015 Dodge Charger, a 2009 Nissan Sentra and a 2016 Nissan Altima.
The impact of the crash forced the Rav-4 and Chevrolet Astro into the next lane, where they were hit by a second semi-truck.
Luna was taken to Del Sol Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Astro, Jesus Sanchez, and the driver of the Dodge Charger, Yolanda Morgan, were also taken to Del Sol for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police say failure to control speed by McDaniel is the major contributing factor in the crash.
